Questioning & Taxonomy for Sparking Discourse & Debate

In this session, we will focus on using Marzano’s Taxonomy to design questions that move students beyond surface learning into deeper thinking and meaningful conversations.

Participants will learn to craft and sequence questions across Retrieval, Comprehension, Analysis, and Knowledge Utilization to promote student reasoning, evidence-based discussion, and structured debate. Educators will practice developing question stems aligned to each level and leave with practical tools and strategies to elevate student voice and academic discourse in any content area.

Participants should have access to a previously delivered lesson for this session.

Allyson Vail

Allyson Vail is an educational leadership and professional learning specialist with more than 20 years of experience driving instructional excellence, organizational improvement, and educator development. As a Faculty Coach with Instructional Empowerment, she partners with teachers, school leaders, and district teams across multiple states to strengthen instructional practice, implement sustainable systems for continuous improvement, and accelerate student achievement outcomes.

Throughout her career, Allyson has designed and facilitated professional learning, led coaching initiatives, developed implementation frameworks, and supported data-informed decision-making to improve educator effectiveness and organizational performance. Her work focuses on building educator capacity, aligning instruction to rigorous learning goals, leveraging evidence to guide improvement efforts, and creating systems that foster student agency and academic success.

Prior to joining Instructional Empowerment, Allyson served with Hillsborough County Public Schools, one of the nation’s largest school districts, where she held roles including High School Mathematics Teacher, Mathematics Department Chair, Instructional Coach, Peer Evaluator, Instructional Mentor, and District Resource Teacher for School Improvement. In these positions, she led professional learning initiatives, supported school improvement planning, coached educators and leaders, and contributed to districtwide efforts focused on instructional quality and student outcomes.

In addition to her K–12 leadership experience, Allyson has taught English virtually to elementary and adult learners across Asia, Europe, and South America, further strengthening her expertise in diverse learning environments and global education.

Allyson holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from American College of Education and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from New York Institute of Technology.
